Income Tests

The other test of financial need in Michigan's Medicaid Program relates to a person’s income. Since this article is essentially dealing with the elderly nursing home Medicaid applicant, the income test becomes rather simple:

Does the Medicaid applicant have medical care expenses (which includes the monthly nursing home expense) which exceeds the person's income?

If the applicant’s medical expenses exceed income, then the income test is met and FIA will determine the amount of the applicant's income that will need to be used for nursing home expenses (the patient pay amount). Medicaid will then pick up the balance of the medical expenses.
