Exempt & Non-Countable Assets
In Michigan certain assets are not counted towards the Medicaid asset limit. These assets are called "excluded assets" or "non-countable assets." These assets include:
- A home in Michigan
- Personal belongings and household goods
- One vehicle
- Burial spaces and certain related items for you, your spouse and members of your immediate family (casket, burial plot, vault, headstone, and opening and closing the grave site)
- Up to $1,500.00 designated as a burial fund for you or your spouse
- Irrevocable prepaid funeral contract (this means you cannot get your money back or cancel the contract)
- Value of life insurance if face value is $1,500.00 or less
- Assets which you and your spouse do not have the legal right to dispose
- Assets you and your spouse have not been able to sell. You must have had the asset up for sale at least 30 days during the last three months. Your asking price must not have been more than fair market value. You must not have turned down a reasonable offer.
